If you're reading this, you've likely found yourself navigating through a maze of challenges, bumps, and unexpected detours. Whether you're battling against the formidable foe known as cancer or simply wrestling with the everyday obstacles that life throws your way. Whatever you’re facing, one thing's for sure: you're a warrior in your own right.
How do you overcome challenges with resilience when your whole life has gone to shit?
First, know that you're not alone. In this blog, we’ll explore a few ways to make it through when you find yourself in the weeds. Let's dive in and discover just how unstoppable we can be when we face our obstacles head-on, armed with nothing but a smile and a sense of humor.
Embracing the Journey
What is resilience? It is the process and outcome of effectively coping with tough or demanding life situations. It is essential for overcoming the obstacles we face every single day.
As women, we juggle more hats than a magician at a circus. We're expected to balance families, work and societal expectations with the finesse of a surgeon with a scalpel. Yet, despite these challenges, women continue to overcome obstacles, proving that we are not just survivors but THRIVERS!
So, how do you overcome obstacles that may be more challenging than mastering the art of tackling work, life, and the 816 other things you forgot about?
During my journey with 2 breast cancer diagnoses, I navigated the ups and downs of treatment and the emotional toll it took on my life. I started out in a place of darkness and depression and emerged a new and stronger woman ready to tackle any challenge life threw at me with resilience and empowerment.
By transforming challenges into opportunities, you can create a more positive mindset and move forward towards your goals with finesse.
The Role of Humor in Resilience
As a two-time cancer warrior, humor has always been vital to my overall wellness and ability to shift my mindset to a more positive one. The healing power of laughter is endless and helps to foster strength and resilience.
Need a good laugh? Fully embracing all of the absurdities in life (trust me, there is plenty of crazy shit these days!) will create a more positive shift in perspective. By incorporating humor as a coping mechanism, you will be able to face challenges with more ease and a lot more fun!
Figure out what makes you laugh and then find ways to include it in your daily life.
Surround yourself with people who add humor to your life. There is nothing better than sitting around with a group of people laughing so hard that you pee in your pants! I highly recommend bringing an extra set of clothes!
Fill your closet with funny shirts. Kickstart your day with laughter by listening to a comedy podcast. Set up a dedicated space on Instagram or TikTok where you can gather your favorite hilarious memes or videos… NOTHING IS OFF THE TABLE!
Navigating Obstacles: Lessons from a Cancer Survivor
Every day, thousands of stories of triumph represent the path to resilience. By turning setbacks into strength, overcoming obstacles becomes a much easier task.
You must first identify the core issue then brainstorm possible solutions. By breaking down the obstacles into manageable parts and approaching it with a problem-solving attitude, you can navigate challenges more effectively and foster a sense of empowerment.
- KNOW YOURSELF! Self-awareness will allow you to recognize your thoughts, emotions, and reactions to adversity. Acknowledge your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth.
- Change and uncertainty is CERTAIN!. Be FLEXIBLE.
- Engage in activities that promote resilience, such as physical exercise, journaling or spending time outside in nature.
By incorporating these different strategies into your life, you can foster a mindset that allows you to navigate adversity with courage, strength, and optimism.
Here are some examples of survivor stories that might give you some inspiration and hope.
Relying on Friends and Loved Ones
Having a strong support system is vital to overcoming obstacles. Your “tribe” can help alleviate some of the burdens you face like cooking, running errands, or helping with household chores. Their support and encouragement will be essential for getting assistance during challenging times, allowing you to focus your energy on overcoming the obstacle at hand.
Join a support group either through your community or online and engage with other people who are going through a similar challenge. Support groups offer a safe environment where people can openly express their feelings, fears, and frustrations without judgment. You might even make a few new friends!
It is validating and comforting to share similar experiences with others. Members of support groups often share amazing tips, coping strategies, and resources for dealing with obstacles. Learning from others' experiences can provide valuable insights to managing challenges effectively.
By actively participating in support group discussions, sharing personal experiences, and offering support to others, you can develop a sense of empowerment and self-efficacy. Feeling valued and contributing to the well-being of others can enhance self-esteem and confidence in your ability to cope.
More Tools for Cultivating Resilience
The journey to empowerment should also include self care, my personal favorite, and mindfulness. How do you overcome obstacles if your mind and body are not in sync?
- Engage in regular exercise or movement that you enjoy, whether it's walking, yoga, dancing, or sports. Physical activity not only benefits the body but also releases endorphins that improve mood and reduce stress.
- Nourish your body with nutritious foods.
- Prioritize sleep and establish a consistent sleep schedule to allow your body and mind to rest and recharge. Quality sleep is essential for cognitive function, mood regulation, and overall well-being. Trust me, sleep deprivation can ruin your day!
- Practice stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation or progressive muscle relaxation to calm the mind and reduce stress levels.
- Learn to SAY NO to activities or commitments that drain your energy or contribute to stress. Don't be afraid to set boundaries or you will end up being Mary Poppins on steroids!
- Practice self-compassion and self-kindness. Stop the self-criticism as much as possible.
- Focus on purpose: identify personal values and goals that allow you to stay connected to a sense of purpose and meaning even in difficult times. Become involved in or donate to a charity.
In conclusion, overcoming obstacles with resilience is not just about navigating challenges; it's about transforming setbacks into opportunities for growth, adapting in the face of adversity, and emerging stronger, wiser, and more empowered than before.
